A vein map identifies which veins are working correctly and which are not. The ultrasound exam is done with the patient in a standing position. It is a lengthy appointment, with the ultrasound map taking 60-90 minutes to scan both legs.
Prepare for your ultrasound by:
- Being hydrated on the day of the scan.
- Eating a snack before your visit.
- Bring loose-fitting shorts to wear during your scan. No compression shorts.
- Wear comfortable flat-soul shoes.
Radiofrequency Ablation, also known as Thermal Ablation uses heat to seal the "trunk" veins closed.
To prepare:
- Eat and drink normally
- Take your regular meds
- Bring or purchase in the clinic a pair of 20-30 mmHg, thigh-high graduated compression stockings
- You will be asked to wear disposable shorts provided by Trident Vein Center.
- Shower before the visit. It would be best if you did not shower again until the following morning.
Post Procedure:
- Wear your compression stockings for the next 3 days. You may remove them when sleeping.
- You may remove all bandages the morning after your procedure. Place a Band-Aid over the site where the steri-strip was (under the lowest cotton ball). Change Band-Aid every day for three days.
- Walk for 20-30 minutes at least twice a day.
- Take Ibuprofen (200 mg, 3 pills, 3x/day) or Tylenol (625 mg, 3x/day) as needed for pain. Do not drive for 24 hours if taking any prescription sedative.
- No air travel or prolonged car trips for 72 hours following the procedure. If you need to sit in the same position for more than one hour, take a short walk, or if unable, try repeated calf muscle contractions.
- Drink plenty of water.
- No baths, hot tubs or pool activities for 7 days.
Varithena injections are a chemical sclerosant that causes the "branch" veins to seal closed.
To Prepare:
- Eat and drink normally
- Take your regular meds
- Bring or purchase in the clinic a pair of 20-30 mmHg, thigh-high graduated compression stocking
- Bring a pair of loose-fitting shorts to wear during the procedure. No compression shorts.
Post Procedure:
- You may apply an ice pack to areas of discomfort (30 minutes at a time with 30-minute breaks).
- Wear your compression stockings for the next 3 days. You may remove them when sleeping.
- When out in the sun, use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. This will decrease the chance of permanent skin staining over the areas where your veins were treated.
- Walk for 20-30 minutes at least twice a day.
- Take Tylenol (625 mg, 3x/day) as needed for pain. If that is not helping, then take Ibuprofen (200 mg, 3 pills, 3x/day). Do not drive for 24 hours if taking any prescription sedative or pain medications.
- No air travel or prolonged car trips for 72 hours following treatment. If you need to sit in the same position for more than one hour, take a short walk, or if unable, try repeated calf muscle contractions.

Healing time from vein procedures can vary from person to person, but it's important to set the expectation that complete healing may take a year or more. While some individuals may experience significant improvement within six months of the procedure, others may require more time to recover fully. It's also important to note that if you're experiencing swelling in your legs, it's common for this to take about a year to improve. Therefore, it's essential to be patient and to follow our recommendations for post-procedure care to ensure a successful recovery.
